CLEANING OUTDOOR SPACES IN WINTER: ALL THE USEFUL TOOLS

The cold season produces and accumulates more dirt in the open spaces of our homes or workplaces.

To easily maintain a good level of cleanliness in winter, however, just rely on the right tools: let’s find out what they are.

In this article we are going to learn how and where to use pressure washers, sweepers and other specific cleaning tools to perform effective winter maintenance of outdoor spaces.

THE DRAWBACKS IN WINTER

The weather elements characterizing winter are, unfortunately, carriers of dirt and litter that make the outdoor spaces of our homes unclean.

The wind carries leaves that fall abundantly from the trees and accumulates them, along with wastepaper and other urban waste, in the corners of forecourts, gardens, balconies and courtyards.

Rain, mixing with dust and smog, deposits layers and layers of dirt on all vertical and horizontal surfaces: windows, glazing, roofs, canopies, facades, flooring, outdoor furniture and furnishings.

Added to this is the formation of mud due to the action of water on topsoil, which is even worse when storms or snowfall scatter these materials everywhere. In colder areas, then, the use of salt to prevent icing leaves marks on the ground that stain and, if not removed, can also corrode floors.

Moisture also often causes mold and moss to form in shaded areas, around pots and planters, or on fences, untreated wooden floors and objects.

Added to these factors is an extra one, namely laziness: if, in fact, spring temperatures entice us more to work outdoors, the harsh winter makes us more reluctant to tinker outside, in contact with water and dirt.

PRESSURE WASHER: CLEANING EASILY AND QUICKLY EVEN IN WINTER

In fact, the traditional method for cleaning outdoor spaces involves the use of the classic water hose combined with brooms and dustpans. During months characterized by plenty of rain and moisture, however, there is little point in adding more liquid; instead, it is good to understand that it is the water pressure that produces the real cleaning power, which is why the primary tool for cleaning outdoor spaces in winter is the pressure washer.

A home pressure washer, in fact, emits a pressurized jet of water at hundreds of bars, capable of effortlessly cleaning flat and vertical surfaces, saving water and time and preventing any damage caused by trowels and scrapers.

The force of water is able to detach the layers of dirt deposited by the bad weather and helps move fallen leaves and trash to the ground for later removal, thus greatly reducing the effort and time of manual operations, as well as avoiding the risk of damaging floors and surfaces by trying to remove stains and marks with abrasive tools.

Powerful but controlled, the high water pressure is endured without any problems even by glass frames, allowing the quick and easy cleaning of windows as well. Greater caution, however, should be observed when treating wooden windows and doors.

The use of a pressure washer also results in water savings of 70 percent compared to traditional water hose washing, coupled with lower environmental costs achieved by doing without detergents and polluting chemicals.

THE RIGHT ACCESSORIES FOR BETTER CLEANING

In addition to the different applicable nozzles - each capable of diversifying the jet for special purposes - the pressure washer can be equipped with various accessories that make cleaning even more convenient.

Lances and extensions help to reach the most distant or awkward spots; special brushes, fixed or rotating, make it easy to clean floors, doors, windows, blinds and shutters; special models, finally, allow the application of detergents to remove tough dirt such as mold, moss or residues of lubricant and other materials that may leak from vehicles.

For those, then, who are lucky enough to have a pool at home, the pressure washer is ideal for performing winter maintenance tasks during the period when the pool is being drained. Pressurized water is very effective in removing all the dirt that a swimming pool can accumulate: lime scale, mold, bacteria, fungi, algae, bird droppings or residue from sunscreen creams and oils.

CLEANING WITH THE FLOOR SWEEPER IN WINTER

For cleaning larger outdoor spaces, such as corporate yards and parking lots, the best tool for “fighting” against winter dirt is undoubtedly the floor sweeper.

Fast, efficient, and easy to use, floor sweepers are the ideal tool for cleaning up on the ground in no time and with no effort on the part of the operator - an unthinkable result if you want to clean hundreds of square meters with a broom and dustpan. These machines are capable of removing dust, soil and coarse debris in any condition and on a variety of materials: concrete, asphalt, resilient materials or plastics.

In just one go, the sweeper picks and sucks up whatever it finds in its path, leaving the floor completely clean and being especially effective on drier ground free of excessive mud.

CLEARING ROOFS AND GUTTERS WITH A PRESSURE WASHER

Rain, snow and wind leave traces of their passage particularly on the roofs, in the drains and along the gutters of houses and buildings. If regular maintenance is not done, foliage, topsoil and guano form obstructions not allowing water to drain properly.

Thus, during heavy storms, unwanted spills may occur from horizontal gutters, but the accumulation of water will, in the long run, corrode the downspouts causing holes and leaks.

Pressure washers are also useful and effective here, as they can be used in conjunction with a pipe-flushing probe. These are probes of different lengths, consisting of a steel head with a rounded shape, which use back jets to move forward inside the pipe, thanks to the water pressure, and to remove the cause of the obstruction.
